Touch Screen Gloves and Co. is a family business which started right out of my basement! Its still a small company and my wife and I still do the majority of the work. We dont distribute our gloves through any retail chains and we refuse to do so because they seem to be looking for inferior quality/ high markup products. But ours is a story of perseverance, and one which proves that small Mom and Pop style businesses are still alive in this country. Despite our size, our lack of marketing experience, and our limited financial resources, we were still able to sell more touch gloves this year than almost any touch screen glove company out there that we know of! The reason is simple: we make a great quality product, and we sell it at a great price. We dont have corporate lawyers and high priced accounting teams or advertising agencies to pay and this savings trickles down to our price tag. Now its our turn to give back. I have selected three charitable causes that are very dear to my heart. As mentioned, 25% of the profits from the proceeds on the Living Social promotion from 2/27-3/12 will go to the following three charitable causes:
1. Orphanages: Unicef estimates there are approximately 210 million orphans in the world, many who have no food or clean water. I myself was orphaned when I was a baby, and I was lucky enough to get adopted and come to America at a young age. I would like to donate to some of the wonderful groups who help orphaned children, groups that help to give children a chance to prosper, a chance I was once given.
2. Cancer Research: Each year globally, 12.7 million people learn they have cancer, and 7.6 million people die from the disease. In fact 10 years ago this month my Mother passed away from Ovarian Cancer at the young age of 62, I was only 22 at the time. Chances are that you know someone who has been impacted by cancer as well. The more money we give the better the chance are that doctors can discover how to manipulate cancer cells within our lifetimes.
3. Alzheimers disease Research and Care: Alzheimers is the sixth-leading cause of death in the country and the only cause of death among the top 10 in the United States that cannot be prevented, cured or even slowed. My father was diagnosed with Alzheimers in 2003, and by 2006 he no longer recognized me. Take it from me; it is a devastating disease. My Father has been living with Alzheimers now for almost 10 years. Its important to allocate resources to the doctors who research cures for this disease, as well as to groups who facilitate care for the afflicted.
There was a time when I was a charity case myself, and through hard work my family and I are now in a position where we can do our part to help others. I'm no different than you; I had an idea and I worked hard to put it into action. Dreams dont cost you anything, so you might as well dream big! Be persistent, be consistent, and take action. Living Social is a huge company and they work with a lot of very large merchants; they turned my gloves down nearly 20 times before running this deal. I never gave up; I told them to disregard the size of my company and to instead focus on the quality of my gloves.
